Craig's Bio:
You might say Craig Larson was born to be in banking. When he was a young child, his parents founded what is today Starion Bank when they bought a bank in Oakes, N.D. in 1969. Frank was a lawyer in Valley City with a passion for making a difference in the community and in peoples’ lives. He saw banking as a vehicle to do that. He ran the bank by the motto: if you go into a small town and the town is doing well, you’ll find a community bank behind that town supporting it. Young Craig, who admired his father, soaked it all in, embracing the small town values he learned early on and that have guided his career as a community banker.
Craig studied finance in college. He spent one year in Minnesota, then chased the warmer weather to Arizona where he earned his degree from Arizona State University. After college, Craig returned to North Dakota to work at the family bank in Ellendale. A few years later, he transferred to Bismarck-Mandan where they had recently purchased another bank. Over the years, Craig served in a variety of roles including operations, customer service and finance; he also sold insurance and ran the investment division. Then, in 1997, he was named CEO, a position he still holds today.
Craig is a past president of the Independent Community Banks of North Dakota. He served as president of the Charles Hall Youth Services Foundation Board as well as vice chair for the University of Mary Board of Trustees, where he also served on its Finance and Investment Committees. A committed advocate for family business, he is an active member, and former board chair, of the Prairie Family Business Association.
