As a Conscious Capitalist, your goal is to create value for your stakeholders. But what are the ingredients that go into value creation? This workshop introduces a framework of multiple capitals (e.g., social, natural, intellectual, human, reputational) you can use to strategically create value for your stakeholders. You’ll learn what each type of resource is, how it can be developed, and what it looks like in practice through case examples. The session concludes with an exercise to help you identify tangible and intangible resources your own business uses to create value for your stakeholders, and how these can be used for performance monitoring and stakeholder accountability reporting.

Background

Profitability is increasingly related to intangible assets like intellectual capital, reputation, and stakeholder relationships. Recognizing this shift, college courses are beginning to teach students how to create value by developing both financial and non-financial resources. This workshop features cutting edge curriculum developed at Arizona State University by Dr. Elizabeth Castillo. Her “toolbox for value creation” includes both financial resources and intangible value drivers like culture, organizational learning, and employee engagement. In this workshop, you will experience:

  • A case study — How did independent bookstores reinvent themselves in the face of disruption by Amazon?
  • ·Overview of Integrated Thinking and Reporting — a type of social accounting that illuminates intangible assets and value creation process
  • Examples of each type of capital in action
  • Activity — identify your business’ value drivers using a multiple capitals inventory
  • Next steps — ideas for metrics and KPIs to incorporate intangible assets into your business model
