Would attracting more investors, customers, and employees help your business?

I remember back in early 2013 – sitting in a conference room at Apple’s corporate headquarters at One Infinite Loop in Cupertino, CA – being asked by a puzzled procurement manger ‘how in the hell did you get a contract with Apple as a 13-person startup with barely more than an MVP [minimum viable product]?’  That’s when it really hit me, the full impact of focusing on solving a social issue on the future success of my business.” – Tyler Lyman

Over the course of Tyler Lyman’s career, he discovered that philanthropy, in and of itself, is not sustainable.  Yet, the benefit of incorporating “social impact” into one’s business IS a true driver of business success.  Tyler will share his journey starting in 2001, while working at a Fortune 50 firm, where he developed a passion project of curated volunteer opportunities in Africa.  While the project provided great benefit to the communities served by the volunteers, following a selling off of the division he was working in, the project he helped build faded out of existence.  Why would a program of such great impact be left to wither away?

From that experience, Tyler’s journey of starting several new businesses enabled him to instill a “social impact” mindset into his organizations.  When his companies were able to identify the type of impact they wanted to make, understood and could measure the efficacy of their efforts, and ensured the value of social impact was understood throughout the organization, he found the value for the business went beyond just the impact effort was targeting.

As an example, in 2013 Tyler started a company in China which aimed to improve the livelihood of the more than 250M migrant factory workers who make the technology and other goods we each use every day.  Their mobile platform connected workers with a pathway to improve their livelihood and allow the brands they supported an opportunity to invest in their upstream supply chain workforce.  During the 6 years Tyler lead the company, his team grew monthly active users to over 2M, delivered 10+M hours of training annually and helped ~350K workers find new worth and opportunity outside of manufacturing.  The first customer that enabled this company to have this impact was Apple.

Today, Tyler continues to build and invest in sustainable businesses which deliver a social impact.  In 2020, he launched HALEE, a home energy startup with the mission to reduce reliance on carbon energy by 70% in the residential market.  HALEE’s home operating system platform leverages an artificial-intelligence (AI) engine which integrates renewable energy production with conservation in the home.
